Most people now how to train or will have a favourite training session. You will train with a specific goal in mind. For the training to move you towards your goal several things need to happen.
First your chosen training need to be relevant to your goal and then you need to complete it as planned. Secondly when you train you breakdown your muscles, particularly if it is a high end effort or a long training session. So you need to refuel your body so it can give your muscles the nutrients they need to re-build.
Then thirdly you need to give your muscles the chance to recover and use the nutrients to re-build. Give yourself sufficient time so you are not fatigued the next time you train, or the next training session is in line with the amount of recovery you have had.
Get these three elements right and the next time you come to train you will have a better physical platform to train from. Gradually you should see progression, through more power, or less effort (lower HR), or longer intervals held, or more consistent interval efforts.
Getting these elements right over a long period will lead to improvements in your performance. Get them wrong, by choosing the wrong training sessions, or not taking in enough nutrients or allowing enough recovery time, could mean you do not make progress towards your goal or see the improvements you wanted.
As you become a more mature athlete then getting these three elements right becomes more important and difficult. You will note that you can lose muscle, take longer to recover, cannot train as much. Getting your diet right to feed your muscles is even more important as what you need changes with age.
